Partial Forest Red Gum Tree Removal at Helensvale

Helensvale High School on the Gold Coast called Tree Essence Arborists with quite a unique problem with one of their very large Forest Red Gum Trees (Eucalyptus tereticornis). The first issue was that there was a significant active crack in the compression fork of the tree. With each growing season there is a high risk factor of the tree completing splitting due to each stem increasing in diameter placing more pressure on the union.

The Gum Tree was 35 metres high and is adjacent to the Agricultural department's vegetable garden. On the other side of the tree is a garden shed. Ensuring the safety of the students, teachers and property was a high priority. We had to plan well in advance in how we were going to tackle this problem of the tree removal because...the second issue was that there was bird life in the bottom section of the trunk. In the two (2) naturally occurring tree hollows were bird nests, so saving both Fauna and Flora was the objective of both Tree Essence and the Helensvale High School.

We used high capacity ratchet straps while dismantling the tree, piece by piece, leaving the healthy bottom of the tree intact. There was a significant amount of timber removed and we were able to utilise it in 2 different ways. 7 logs were made for outside seating for the students and the debris was chipped up on site and used in the school gardens. This was a positive outcome for all and we thank Helensvale High School for trusting us with this whole project.
