Byron Bay is a coastal town in Byron Shire, New South Wales. It is located 480 mi north of the state capital, Sydney. It is also the largest town in Byron Shire.
The Arakwal, an Indigenous group, call the area Cavvanbah which means meeting place.
The first industry in town was timber cutting from the Australian red cedar. After World War I, it went insignificant. Around the 1870s, another industry took place in the Byron Bay. It was gold mining of the beaches. There were about 20 mining leases to extract gold on Tallow Beach.

In the 2016 Australian census, this town recorded a population of 9,246. 1.6% of the population consisted of indigenous Australians. 64% were people born in Australia.
