DID YOU KNOW...

Gilston is a suburb in Gold Coast, Queensland, located 13 kilometers southwest of Southport and 69 kilometers south-southeast of Brisbane. As of 2011, the suburb garnered a population of 1,449 individuals living in the area.

The settlement in the area generally began in the early 1860s. The main industries are dairying and timber cutting.

The suburb was known by the Indigenous name ‘Boieeboiee’ which means ‘broad-leafed apple tree’. It was also known as Winwin which means white oak. The name Gilston was given by a local storekeeper, Mr. Bryant.

The Nerang Upper Provisional School was established on the 1st of June 1981. It became Gilston Provisional School in 1903. In 1908, the school’s name was changed to Gilston State School. The institution was located on Gilston Road. Until 1985, the school had no choice but to transfer its building due to the increased number of enrollees. The Gilston State School provides education from Prep to Year 6 and is currently located at 588 Worongary Road.

In March 1923, the first telephone office in the suburb was opened.

On the 16th of June 1933, the Gilston Hall was opened with the help of Thomas Plunkett, a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Albert. The building was constructed on the site of the old Lutheran Church located on Gilston Road.

The City Council of Gold Coast utilizes a mobile library that visits the Gilston Public Hall.

One of the heritage-listed sites in the suburb is the H2 Hinde Tree that is located in Colliston, 926 Gilston Road, and was included in the list of Queensland Heritage Register on the 14th of August in 2008.
Gilston is held under the Federal Division; Wright, an Australian Electoral Division represented by Scott Buchholz since 2010.

Gilston is a locality filled with parks. Parks automatically translate to trees. with a tree density as thick as Gilston’s, tree maintenance is one of the most important things that preserve the quality of the suburb. For tree-related services in Gilston like tree pruning and tree removal, Tree Essence knows how to get the job done perfectly.
